| Come on, spoil yourself and relax |
 |
If you can tear
yourself away from the pool at your villa, which will be
difficult, the area around Elounda has dozens of beaches to
swim from and so many interesting places, that you could not
possibly visit them all in one holiday on the
island.
If you are interested in sight-seeing, Crete is
perfect. The island is fairly large, (around 150 miles long by
40 wide at it widest, although only 8 – 10 in places) and the
North is so different from the South.
Each has it’s own
beauty and it’s own special features. The island as a whole
has a mixture of so many different things to visit from
bustling markets, to lovely little harbours, to area’s where
you will be lucky to see a goat or a donkey and where you will
struggle to hear a noise of any kind. |
If you are
interested in history, then Crete is a paradise for you.
You can visit one of the literally hundreds of
archaeology sites dating back to the Minoan’s
(3,000 – 900 BC), the Macedonians, the Roman’s (quite
modern at around 100 BC), the Byzantine’s, the Arabs or
the Venetians to name but a few. The whole island is
covered with examples of civilisations long
gone, or in some cases, NOT so long gone as typically
illustrated by the fascinating island of Spinalonga,
In many respects, parts of Crete even
today, seem to be unchanged over the past hundred or so
years and a drive or even a walk into any of the
mountain village area’s will seem like a trip back in
time as people lead happy simple lives without such
everyday UK commodities as running water, televisions
and even, electricity |
